Assignment 1 task 2

Even though Television Idents offers the channels lots of opportunities if there are limitations of a televison ident that can hinder it from being successful.

Typography
Typography - refers to the style, text type, font, size, logo, shape the ident has to use graphics and text to communicate a much deeper meaning in a simplistic manor. Typography is a limitation because the designers have to designers have to display who the company is aiming their channel toward and maintaining the audience through imagery. The ident can only be displayed on screen for less than 20 seconds, which makes it challenging for the company to show the ident how they wish. Translating graphics and text to the television screen is also difficult. Not all fonts will be displayed correctly causing typography to appear broken up or pixilated. This is also a limitation because it stops the production from being creative with the logo, however it keeps the identity and makes it recognisable.

The similarity between these three logo are they are all a production of the BBC, "BBC" in all these logos are all in the capital letters, they all have the same font and they are all in a square which is either white or black. However they are different because BBC Radio is for grown ups, children do not listen to radio station, adults find it entertaining. We can see in the logo of the radio channel, all the numbers are in a circle, most of the numbers are in the font and the rest are not. In the logo the BBC originality is still there because the left the "BBC & RADIO" the same at all times but only the numbers are were changed. CBBC and CBeebies are for young children. The CBeebies logo is very babyish this is because the age group for this channel is younger than that of the CBBC. The "CBeebies" is in a bubble writing form, the first 2 letters are in capital form and the rest of it is in small capital. They are all squashed up together in a semi circle, this is good for children because bubble writing looks fun and playful which makes it easy for the children to be connect. The CBBC on the other hand is for an older age group (6-12), it is still for children but older, this means a more mature font but still playful. Four different fonts was used for each letter. the first letter "C" is legible and doesn't look too playful, the second letter "B" is in a bubble writing, it looks playful the third letter "B" is very square, it has sharp angles and no curves. the last letter "C" is the most playful looking out it very curvy and round like and there is no straight line in it. all of the letters are wobbly and not on the line, this is the typical way a child will write.

Colour
Colour is an important factor to TV idents, they have to be able to attract the audience while also not being to over powering. Possible limitations of colours in idents could be that when your idents are being shown on TV they could come across as being disorientated this may be because to any colours are used together, most idents prefer to use primary colours as they look better on TV, if too much colours are used in one particular ident it may be a distraction and have less of impact to the audience watching. Another limitation to TV idents is that most TV stations have a particular colour related to their channel for example E4 is known to use purple, CBBC is known to use green, this makes it almost impossible to be creative and there is a less choice while making an ident as you want to stand out and be an individual, however it is imperative to have your own colours because it builds brand awareness. In order to make people familiar with your production, also it makes it recognizable.
For example the E4's logo is in colour purple and white we also come across it in the ident in the setting of this ident apart form the beach sand, and the yellow on the swimming tube, every thing else in the setting is purple and white. They still keep the originality of the channel and keep it recgonizable.

Aspect-ratio
Aspect-ratio (the dimensions required to fit the screen) an aspect ratio has an effect on the overall design, as the designer will be producing the ident for a specific shape. This restricts the design itself as the typical aspect ratio of 4:3 creates a rectangular and landscape, the aspect ratio can also be effective through idents in a different way. Although they are usually designed for a 4:3 ratio, not everyone will be viewing television in this format. For example, there will be people watching television, which will use a 16:9 ratio. This means that the design will translate differently onto these forms stretching the ident outwards or squashing it inwards and altering the look of the design. Also, this means that the ident may not actually to be able to be shown in some case.

Limitations
Limitations are usually disadvantages but the in case of idents they are positive, for example, for the BBC 1 typography, where they have applied the same font for the ident over the years, it makes their font options very limited also it means they cannot be creative but at the same time it creates a brand identity for them because when people see a BBC production it they can recognise and familiarise with it.   . For example the limitations of colour that come with the certain channel isn't a bad thing it just makes it easier to found out what colours you have to use for the ident.
Adhering to a desired tone
The ident for each individual channel has to correspond with the channel’s genre. For example BBC 1 has a ballroom ident or an ident with sparkly balls in it before strictly come dancing comes on. However on BBC 3 ident it has an animated ident for a humorous show like family guy of American dad. Also one needs to consider the target audience before including any form of tone to their ident. BBC 3 ident gives a bright and lively tone showing that it is more targeted at teenagers. It uses a mixture of bright lights, vibrant colours, fast and exciting music, movement, done with animated scenery and characters. The tone is created from the artistic taste of the ident such as the movement, colour, sound, etc.

Duration
Duration of idents is important because it cannot be too long or too short. The idents need to last the right amount of time because if you are showing the scheduling of the channel and it only lasts for a short amount of time the viewers wouldn't be able to see what is going to be on because they would probably only be able to see one show that is going to be shown.
For example BBC one Dog Display Ident

  1. Add two examples for the final point, one short and one long version of the same ident.
