Assignment 2 task 1 ideas generation

My 1st Idea
For the first idea, the storyline was for different shapes to be doing different things at each times of the day, the first shape which was a square was waking up in the morning, another triangle was at a birthday in the afternoon, the circle was an Halloween theme at night. And the end of each if their activity, the shapes would come together and do a little dance and in during this process the CBeebies logo would appear in the background. I ended up not picking this idea because it was not self-explanatory. Due to the fact that we were making a children ident, I felt like it had to be as simple as possible and understandable without having to explain it to anybody. This idea did not work because there was too much events happening in one ident and do not have a connection.

2nd idea
For my second idea I chose to use the clouds and the sun as the only things in this clip. The storyline was to make the clouds appear one by one and the sun appearing at the back little by little and at the end of the clip the CBeebies appears on the clouds letter by letter. The reason why the idea did not project well because, it made the ident look boring and the a bit too difficult to understand considering the fact that it is an ident for children. Another thing with this ident idea is that there is not much life in it. There are not much characters in it so if someone watches it, when it ends one would have to explain what just happened to the audience. This idea did not work because there was little to no story line involved.

3rd Idea
For the last idea, which was the one I ended up using, the storyline was inspired by Tarzan. This ident was bright and colourful, very active and interesting included a square character with long hands and legs. The storyline is about a square character, swinging from the clouds and picking up letters from between yellow fences to form the CBeebies. And at the end of the animation, the square play doh does a little dance which continues till the end of the animation. This idea works because the storyline is something the children already know about. i choose it because it is something the children can familiarise withThe swinging from clouds to clouds can be recognised from Tarzan and the dance at the end, everyone does that so it is something the children can familiarise with. This ident can be used in the afternoon or during summer time, because of the colours and the swinging in it. It also has different bright colours which can be related to summer and the holiday times. This ident is suitable for the CBeebies channel because the theme of the ident is in line with what normally comes on CBeebies, the colours are similar to that of the CBeebies like the green, yellow. This colours are colours a children channel would use because it is attractive and draws the kids in.

Assignment 1 Task 3

A suite means a collection with a theme linking them all in some way. A suite of idents consists of different that all have a similar theme that links them together. The purpose of having a suite of idents rather than one creates variety for the audience. The theme that is used throughout the suite is used so that the channel is able to create and maintain their brand identity. This way it is familiar and recognisable to everyone. Another reason why some idents are created is because an ident usually has a specific time and date at which it is able to be shown. For example it would be inappropriate to use a Christmas ident during the Easter period, also it would be inappropriate to use an ident about dogs before a show about elderly people in homes.

One suite that is very good is the idents of the dogs where the circle theme is used. The dogs performing tricks on a green field and end up running around in a circle. This ident cannot be used at any time, it has a certain time where it would be most efficient. This would not be a good ident to show on a Saturday evening before "The Voice" or before a serious drama or horror as it would set the wrong tone for the content. Other than the content of the programme there is also a certain season on which it would be best as it would not look right in the winter because of its brightness and warmness.

This ident is part of BBC circle ident and for the most part will appeal to men more if following the stereotype of men liking sports and girls don't. The best time of the day suited for, it would be around the evening because of the overall colour of it which is dark which means it would look out of place throughout the day or morning when it’s light out. This ident shows to the audience that this programme is very lively because of all of the movement and is also good for showing sports.

Another BBC ident is the one of the Capes. This ident is best targeted at adults and some young people, because the props are applicable to older and younger people. The use of bright colourful capes are very noticeable which can be applied to young people, and the bikes, both young and older people ride bikes, the setting of the ident is situated in a busy area, which could be an illustration of the day people may have had. This ident is most likely to be shown at the late afternoon or almost towards the evening period, during the autumn season. The fascinating thing about this ident is when it starts raining heavily then it becomes sunny. The ident is directing a message to the audience that an exciting programme is coming up.

In a suite of idents there are always idents that are created for the purpose of being played during a specific season, Christmas being a large one. This gives the channel a sense of eventfulness and is a good way to get the audience to be excited for the season and is also a good chance to promote Christmas shows that they will be showing. This ident features a popular actor, David tenant from Doctor Who. This show is targeted at the younger age group, so this ident is also telling the younger people there is something on there for them as well.

All of the idents above have a common theme running throughout which is that they all contain a circle within them. Some of these idents have created the circle by using animals or people moving about which gives the impression that everything ends and starts with BBC and that it is also a well-rounded channel that shows a variety of programming. The other ident uses lights to create the circle.

Assignment 1 task 2

Even though Television Idents offers the channels lots of opportunities if there are limitations of a televison ident that can hinder it from being successful.

Typography
Typography - refers to the style, text type, font, size, logo, shape the ident has to use graphics and text to communicate a much deeper meaning in a simplistic manor. Typography is a limitation because the designers have to designers have to display who the company is aiming their channel toward and maintaining the audience through imagery. The ident can only be displayed on screen for less than 20 seconds, which makes it challenging for the company to show the ident how they wish. Translating graphics and text to the television screen is also difficult. Not all fonts will be displayed correctly causing typography to appear broken up or pixilated. This is also a limitation because it stops the production from being creative with the logo, however it keeps the identity and makes it recognisable.

The similarity between these three logo are they are all a production of the BBC, "BBC" in all these logos are all in the capital letters, they all have the same font and they are all in a square which is either white or black. However they are different because BBC Radio is for grown ups, children do not listen to radio station, adults find it entertaining. We can see in the logo of the radio channel, all the numbers are in a circle, most of the numbers are in the font and the rest are not. In the logo the BBC originality is still there because the left the "BBC & RADIO" the same at all times but only the numbers are were changed. CBBC and CBeebies are for young children. The CBeebies logo is very babyish this is because the age group for this channel is younger than that of the CBBC. The "CBeebies" is in a bubble writing form, the first 2 letters are in capital form and the rest of it is in small capital. They are all squashed up together in a semi circle, this is good for children because bubble writing looks fun and playful which makes it easy for the children to be connect. The CBBC on the other hand is for an older age group (6-12), it is still for children but older, this means a more mature font but still playful. Four different fonts was used for each letter. the first letter "C" is legible and doesn't look too playful, the second letter "B" is in a bubble writing, it looks playful the third letter "B" is very square, it has sharp angles and no curves. the last letter "C" is the most playful looking out it very curvy and round like and there is no straight line in it. all of the letters are wobbly and not on the line, this is the typical way a child will write.

Colour
Colour is an important factor to TV idents, they have to be able to attract the audience while also not being to over powering. Possible limitations of colours in idents could be that when your idents are being shown on TV they could come across as being disorientated this may be because to any colours are used together, most idents prefer to use primary colours as they look better on TV, if too much colours are used in one particular ident it may be a distraction and have less of impact to the audience watching. Another limitation to TV idents is that most TV stations have a particular colour related to their channel for example E4 is known to use purple, CBBC is known to use green, this makes it almost impossible to be creative and there is a less choice while making an ident as you want to stand out and be an individual, however it is imperative to have your own colours because it builds brand awareness. In order to make people familiar with your production, also it makes it recognizable.
For example the E4's logo is in colour purple and white we also come across it in the ident in the setting of this ident apart form the beach sand, and the yellow on the swimming tube, every thing else in the setting is purple and white. They still keep the originality of the channel and keep it recgonizable.

Aspect-ratio
Aspect-ratio (the dimensions required to fit the screen) an aspect ratio has an effect on the overall design, as the designer will be producing the ident for a specific shape. This restricts the design itself as the typical aspect ratio of 4:3 creates a rectangular and landscape, the aspect ratio can also be effective through idents in a different way. Although they are usually designed for a 4:3 ratio, not everyone will be viewing television in this format. For example, there will be people watching television, which will use a 16:9 ratio. This means that the design will translate differently onto these forms stretching the ident outwards or squashing it inwards and altering the look of the design. Also, this means that the ident may not actually to be able to be shown in some case.

Limitations
Limitations are usually disadvantages but the in case of idents they are positive, for example, for the BBC 1 typography, where they have applied the same font for the ident over the years, it makes their font options very limited also it means they cannot be creative but at the same time it creates a brand identity for them because when people see a BBC production it they can recognise and familiarise with it.   . For example the limitations of colour that come with the certain channel isn't a bad thing it just makes it easier to found out what colours you have to use for the ident.
Adhering to a desired tone
The ident for each individual channel has to correspond with the channel’s genre. For example BBC 1 has a ballroom ident or an ident with sparkly balls in it before strictly come dancing comes on. However on BBC 3 ident it has an animated ident for a humorous show like family guy of American dad. Also one needs to consider the target audience before including any form of tone to their ident. BBC 3 ident gives a bright and lively tone showing that it is more targeted at teenagers. It uses a mixture of bright lights, vibrant colours, fast and exciting music, movement, done with animated scenery and characters. The tone is created from the artistic taste of the ident such as the movement, colour, sound, etc.

Duration
Duration of idents is important because it cannot be too long or too short. The idents need to last the right amount of time because if you are showing the scheduling of the channel and it only lasts for a short amount of time the viewers wouldn't be able to see what is going to be on because they would probably only be able to see one show that is going to be shown.
For example BBC one Dog Display Ident

Assignment 1 task 1

TV idents

An ident is a short video or visual image that television channels use to identifying themselves. The design of the ident is also very important because it is the main way a company will get across their message and the purpose of their ident to the audience and will be the main representation of the company’s image. There are many purposes of a television station having a television ident. The purposes of television indents have changeover the years for different reason . One of which is the advancement in technology. Over the years there seems to be a lot of new addition to entertainment, which means it is crucial for all indents to be advanced.

Identifying the channel

This function is very apparent in television idents. The first appearance of the ident was in 1953 on BBC (nicknamed the Bat's Wings) due to the expansion of the commercial TV and viewers needed clarity and reminder of the channel they were watching. Also it was to enable the viewers to identify different channels. With the introduction n of new technologies, modernization of the viewing public and new ideas, idents have evolved.
In 1960 the first BBC TV logo within a circle was introduced. It appears on top of a map of Britain split into the BBC's TV logo would appear and a voice would announce "This is BBC Television". In the early 1900s the emergence of satellite television made it essential for the indents to be high standards. BBC 2 started in 1964.

                                                         1953 - "Bat's Wings"

                                                            1963 "The globe"

There is a huge difference between this two idents, the first looks jam-packed there seems to be a lot going on perhaps to make it look like the ident was well thought of, however, the second ident which was the famous BBC ident, looks a lot calmer and simpler, the globe at the middle of the square shows  they are referring to the earth, also the picture of the earth is very visible and it highlights the map of the continents on the globe. This is their way of telling us they cover everything around the world.

The evolution of BBC idents from 1953-2008 -
The evolution of the BBC1 ident shows how the ident have evolved from basic to professional, it goes from the first ident which was the bats wings and up until 2002 all the ident had the globe theme even when it changed to colour television the globe theme was still going on. 2002 they introduced someone on the skateboard. more interested, more fresh and also they made use of an human being in it.

Organizing the schedule

An ident plays an important role when it comes to keeping a channel's schedule organised. An ident is an ideal opportunity to provide the audience with key information about programming on the channel. This information may entice the viewer to continue watching that particular channel rather than switching over to another channel. This ident is promoting the new series "The Medieval Season" on BBC 4

Segmentation of the scheduling

Non-commercial channels like the BBC do not have the time between programmes that advertisements provide for commercial channels like (ITV and Channel 4). Idents therefore add time in between programmes to:
Provide information
Promote a variety of programming
Regulate the scheduling (fill time)
Provide a break for studio workers (News, Sports)
Most TV shows start and end at "00's or 30's" to make sure the shows start at this times, the idents are used if a show ends earlier than it should e.g if it ends at 57 minutes, there could be three minutes of idents.

Creating the right tone and appealing to the target audience

As well as simply identifying a channel an ident is a chance to provide the audience with information about that channel. It can easily reflect the type of programmes that are shown on it. It is important that an ident sets the right tone for the channel it is on and is appealing for the target audience. When the channel BBC Four arrived it built it’s reputation on having more factual and informative programming. The initial idents therefore reflected this. It is also important that the tone set is appropriate for the age group of the channel. Cbeebies and CBBC have different idents that are appropriate for the different age groups they cater to.
This is a CBeebies (Children channel) Ident. The ident is a short clip of two yellow bubbles bouncing round and having fun, this is similar to what kids would do while plying. The ident is very colorful and theres a lot of giggly type of sound in the background. this is not applicable to any other channel but for a children programme this is exactly what is needed.

Creating corporate identity

Television channels are no longer restricted to one country. An ident therefore helps to create a brand in a range of different locations. Consistency across a range of channels such as the BBC helps to establish a cooperate identity that can be sold across the world. With the growth of online platforms like the BBCiplayer it is vital for corporations to retain the image that could be so easily diluted in the online world.

Creating a brand and encouraging brand loyalty

Building a brand for a particular channel is essential. It encourages the viewing audience to stay loyal to stay loyal to that particular channel. An ident helps to endorse the brand of a particular channel by allowing the audience to become familiar with the logo and the style of the channel. It is a visual reminder of a particular channel and imprints the "brand" into the mind of the audience. This makes them more likely to watch the channel again.

Re branding a channel

More4 recently re - branded their channel and entirely changed it image. The new suite of idents was used to help do this. (insert clips). The change from the former dry, boring More 4 ident to the new one was a huge adjustment. The new ident is more fresh, interesting to watch as there is more than one thing happening at the same time. They kind of give us a hint as to what will happen and what type of shows will be coming on.

Branding a particular content

An ident can be used to identify that particular content or a particular program belongs to a certain channel and therefore "brand" the content. It can also be used to provide a consistent theme across a range of platforms. The BBC one ident about "the voice/eastenders". This ident does two things at the same time it advertises the voice and also is letting the viewing audience know that eastenders is coming on next. this makes the audience aware and keeps them in their sit and not change the channel to another programme.

The BBC three ident about the Olympics shows different things going on at the same, but all mean the same thing. There is the Olympics ring at the center and there is an animated character weight lifting the last "E" of "THREE". These two actions show that BBC 3 is the home Olympics. This is where all the sports and sports updates are reported.

A marketing opportunity

An ident is a clever promotional tool. Different idents themes are produced for different periods, for example the ITV Christmas Ident below, is for Christmas, every seasonal ident they make promotes what to expect.

Packaging and Re packaging

a series of programmes or event often idents are used to promote large events or a new series of programmes.
The strictly come dancing ident moves from the close up of a sparkly ball to a medium long shot to a medium shot to an eventually long shot of the rest of the other of the other sparkly ball. This is similar to the globe ident in the early days but a better version, because there is a voice over and it is colorful.

The sky Movies ident is a very informative ident, there is no voice over yet it explains a lot there are many transitions from like fantasy, sci fi, to the mountain, this explains indirectly that all this theme are the genre of movies the audience will getting to watch. This ident is also 56 secs, which is long, but the audience will not notice because the content is fascinating.
